Mid-layers and waterproof shells.
Jackets that are part of the multi-layer system such as waterproof shells and mid-layers are perfect for people who like to be outdoors and participate in winter activities.
The shell is the technical coat that will protect you from wind, rain and snow. It will allow your layers underneath to perform better and help you keep warm. Typically, shells are made of 3 ply, offer greater resistance and perform better even in cold temperatures. If you want a technical jacket that is lightweight, compressible and breathable, you can use it in the summer as well as the winter. Carry it in your backpack so you have it on hand if the wind picks up or the elements get rough.
The mid-layer is an insulated jacket that will give you the warmth you need when the mercury drops. It can be insulated with synthetic or down. It is usually worn alone in spring and fall, but can be layered with a shell in winter.
Remember, these technical coats can be used year-round but layered in winter and are designed for intense physical activities such as cross-country skiing, snowshoeing or ski touring.
Which insulation material will keep you warmer: synthetic or down?
Down and synthetics are the two main types of insulation used for winter coats. Now, which insulation should you choose?
Down coats contain feathers, goose or duck down that trap air inside the lining. Down has the advantage of being warmer, lighter and more compressible than synthetic insulation. The #1 enemy of down is moisture. When it is too wet, down becomes saturated and loses its ability to trap air and keep you warm. Down coats are suitable for medium to low intensity activities.
Jackets with synthetic insulation have the advantage of wicking sweat away from the fabric and drying quickly. These garments are more resistant to humidity. Generally less expensive than down, they are easy to maintain. Intense or aerobic activities will be well suited to synthetic insulation.
